So you want to be a model?

Well, you have picked a tough business that requires a lot of hard work, patience, and the ability to take rejection well and often. Generally several models if not hundreds are submitted for the same job - not everyone can get the job.

Modeling is NOT the glamorous profession that is portrayed in the movies.

In fact, this is a business where even the most successful models have failed many more times than they have succeeded.

On the plus side, it is a business that will give you the opportunity to meet lots of people, have a lot of fun, make money - and who knows - for the very lucky few even travel, fame and fortune. But the reality is that this is a business that requires constant marketing and research to keep up with trends. Models must take care of themselves and work hard to maintain a marketable image. Photo shoots are often long, take place at odd times and require working in less than desirable conditions.

Still interested? Ok - here is where you start...

To begin work as a commercial model - you need a professional modeling portfolio.

Your modeling portfolio is the most important expenditure you will make in the business of becoming a model.

Your modeling portfolio and the comp card (zed card) that you have printed will ALWAYS be seen by a potential agency or client - before you are.

The portfolio should be filled with photographs that look as though they have been published. You want people to assume that the pictures in your book have been used in a commercial advertisement or fashion magazine.

Certainly - if you are asked, be honest. But you want to impress people with images that look as close to the real thing as possible and show not only how attractive you are - but how much personality you have.

Also - remember the rule - "Less is BETTER!" You don't win any prizes for having more photos than anyone else. You are competing against many other models for jobs. Your pictures need to have the "WOW Factor". They need to be professional - visually catching and most importantly - make you look incredible and show how much personality you have.

Models, Learn Your Business - ONLY THE STRONG [MODELS] SURVIVE

If you are serious about progressing your career, modeling will be hard work. Many jobs will be fun, but some will also involve working in difficult conditions (cold, wet, etc), wearing uncomfortable outfits, or holding uncomfortable poses for significant periods of time.

Persistence is important. Being a model will typically mean having to deal with rejection and criticism (not all of which will be constructive). You may be told you are too tall, too short, too fat, too skinny, too fit, too out of shape, don't have the right look, are not intense enough, are too intense, are not relaxed enough, etc. The point it, you may be criticized in any number of ways depending on who you are working with and what their needs are. It is important that you develop a positive means to be able to deal with criticism.

Dealing with the difficulties associated with modeling will often lead many models to give up before they've really given modeling a chance. If it was truly that easy to make a living at modeling, then everyone would do it. As with any career, the rewards of success can be great, but you generally have to earn them.

If your business is to be a model, then you will need to put in the time, money, and effort in order to be successful. Modeling is work and business is an investment. If this means having to pay a photographer to in order to get attention grabbing photos, then it is something you should absolutely consider.

Starting out in modeling does not have to cost you a lot. However, it pays to be selective about who you work with. As with any investment, it is important to think long-term and to plan out the steps of your career carefully. And in many cases, it pays to pay. And it pays to be prepared.

Try to associate yourself from the start with those people who can help you advance in your career. Who you know and work with in this industry can be just as important as what you know and what you do. Collaborate with people who can make a difference in your future. And continue to do so!

You will need a strong portfolio (which is built up by working with strong photographers). The more experience you gain as a model and the better your portfolio looks, the more legitimate and more seriously you will be taken by clients and photographers.

Models, Learn Your Business - Model Expenses

Models, Learn Your Business - Model Expenses

Riddle Me This:
Why Aspiring Models Think They Don't Have To Pay For Anything?

If You Don't Have A Real Market Base, Who Do You Think You Are?

Modeling agencies often hear new models say "Well, if you liked me you would pay for everything". Unfortunately, the hype surrounding modeling agencies paying for expenses is grossly exaggerated and often wishful thinking on the part of new models who don't understand how the modeling industry really works.
Advice: "Don't pay an agency to represent you" - is absolutely correct.
But that is much different from investing in your own basic start-up costs that don't involve the agency, such as photoshoots, composite cards, etc. These are services you need from outside sources such as photographers, stylists, printers, etc.
Agencies that were willing to finance the careers of new models were much more prevalent in the 1980's than they are today. In the '80's the modeling industry was booming, many of the agencies such as Ford Models, Next, Company, Elite, IMG, etc. were new and building their rosters; clients were paying huge fees for models.
Modeling agencies soon learned that financing the careers of new models was more costly than profitable. Many agencies lost hundreds of thousands of dollars each year when new models were unable to fulfill their obligations for a variety of reasons that were of no fault of the agency. Young models may have found they couldn't handle the stress, they didn't like being away from home, their looks changed, they were difficult to work with, or any number of reasons that would send a new model packing and the agency holding the bill.
Today, many agencies expect to be repaid for advances even if the model does not work. Some agencies have gone as far as taking legal action against models who have outstanding debts. These days over 90% of models working with top agencies in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Paris, London, Milan, etc. did not have their initial expenses advanced and they worked long and hard to get where they are.
As a fashion model you are a self-employed, independent contractor. You are considered a sole proprietor in your own small business, you are not an employee of the agency. In addition to basic start-up costs, professional models, including those represented by top agencies such as Ford Models, Elite, Next, Wilhelmina, DNA, Women or Karin's are required to cover all of their own promotional expenses such as composite cards, agency books, headsheets, websites, couriers, etc. These promotional expenses can run anywhere from $200 - $600 per year to post photos on the agency website, $1,500 - $2,500 per year for composite cards, in addition to couriers, postage, working visa's, legal and accounting fees. Professional models understand that this is simply the cost of doing business and it is standard in the industry for the model to cover these promotional expenses.
Don't make the mistake of telling an agent to pay for your expenses. Agents consider this extremely rude, presumptuous and unprofessional and it is a sure fire way to make the agent show you the door. If an agent is willing to help you financially they will offer it. Keep in mind this is extremely rare and is generally offered only by large agencies in markets such as New York, Paris or Milan and they will deduct what you owe them the moment you book a job.

Normal Start-Up Expenses

Test shoot with a photographer: You should pay approximately $85 - $125 per one change. You will then need prints made from your shoot. Photographers usually charge $20 - $25 per 9 x 12 print.

Professional make-up artists usually charge between $85 - $150 flat rate. This should include at least 3 looks and basic hairstyling.

A clothing stylist will go to stores and gather up-to-date clothes and accessories for your shoot. Rates are generally $125 - $175 flat rate. Clothing stylists are optional but highly recommended if you can find a good one in your area.

After your shoot you can print composite cards or laser copy 3-4 of your photos on one sheet of paper. If you already have an agency they may recommend a good printer that prints composite cards. Prices can vary greatly for composite cards and laser copies so it is a good idea to check around. You may be required to cover the cost to have your photos placed on a headsheet, in an agency promo book or on the agency's website. These are all normal and perfectly legitimate expenses.

We are holding an audition from 7:00 – 7:30 p.m. on (DATE) to hire 14 women to work the 2007 Las Vegas Bud Light Maxim Hook Up Party: 2 party hostesses, 6 go-go dancers, 3 photo models, 2 pillow fighters and 1 Performance Artists or Runway Walkers. You must be at least 21 and up to 27. We’re seeking women with the look that Maxim Magazine likes. You should bring a bikini and heels to the audition. At the party some of the girls will be wearing lingerie or bikinis, so you need to feel comfortable modeling in front of a crowd of about 1,000 male and female guests.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS: Two of the women will act as Hostesses greeting people and handing out free Bud Light bottles. Six will perform as Go-Go Dancers, and must be able to dance the majority of the 4 hour night. They will have a couple of breaks, including 30 minutes while the game show is being taped. Three others will be Photo Models and pose for pictures with guests. Two will be “Pillow Fighters” at a display called “The Bed of Roses”. They’ll occasionally have playful pillow fights and tickle each other. And finally one Performance Artist will walk around the party changing costumes every hour or so. All the talent will work 5 hours.

On the night of the audition and the night of the actual party the selected women must bring proof of age with them. If you don’t bring proof, we cannot admit you to the party. The night of the party we will provide you with the wardrobe, but do bring an extra wardrobe/outfit – something that accentuates your positives – in case our outfit doesn’t fit or flatter you.

If you are chosen at the audition you will work at the Bud Light Maxim Hook Up Party the following night from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.; however we’d like you to show up at 7:30 p.m. to be photographed, do paperwork, dress and have a meeting.

Following is our payment for the 5 hour party night:

Models, Learn Your Business - Frequently Asked Questions

Models, Learn Your Business - Frequently Asked Questions

Models, Learn Your Business - Frequently Asked Questions

How much do models get paid?
It depends on the market. NYC rates are $250/hr. for consumer advertising, $200/hr. for trade advertising, $150/hr. for catalogue, and usually a few hundred dollars/ day for editorial. Other markets have other rates. Models also get "use" fees for certain kinds of advertising projects i.e., billboards, posters, in store etc. These use fees can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. National advertisements pay $2000 - $4000 a day. When your experience and portfolio grow your rates grow also. Supermodels now make up to $30,000 a day.

How much money necessary to get started?
The minimum is $400-$2000 depending on the market.

What kinds of advertising materials do models use?
Composite cards, portfolios of test pictures, tear sheets, participation in agency books.

Who pays for the advertising material?
The models always pay for his/her own materials.

How much do pictures and composites cost?
Digital composites are about $200/100 cards. Pictures are anywhere between $250-$500 for a test session that will produce 3-5 photographs. However, the cost of shooting with a good photographer is closer to $500.00 for 5 photographs.

How many photographs should include portfolio at the beginning of modeling career?
Please read info about initial modeling portfolios.

Copyright
The photographer or his client always owns the copyrights and negatives and other media of a photo session. Never expect to receive any negatives If you want to get your negatives, you have to negotiate it before your shooting session. Do not forget to include this condition to the shooting contract.

How often should I update my portfolio?
Your portfolio needs to reflect your current look. Since hairstyles and clothing styles change rapidly your portfolio needs to reflect not only your current look but also the current look of Fashion.
You have to understand that photos in your portfolio will compete with other portfolios. If your portfolio is great - you will win. But if your photos are not good enough - you will loose! What does it mean? You never get a good job and probably no job at all.

How long does it take to get paid for a finished job?
Usually it takes within 60-90 days of the work assignment.

Models, Learn Your Business - Overall Advice

Models, Learn Your Business - Overall Advice

It should always be remembered it's for you to decide on the type of modeling you want to do, don't let anyone talk you into a different type of photography unless you are completely happy to do so. Don't ever do anything that you might be sorry for later.

It should be of the up most importance that the safety of the model is the number one priority.
  • Always make sure someone knows where you are and the time you are expected back.
  • If possible take someone with you to a photo shoot.
  • Let the photographer know that someone else knows where you are.
  • Never give out your address unless you are confident about the person your giving it to.
  • Don't give out your home phone number use a mobile number instead (most mobiles can't be traced).
  • Be wary of model agencies that want a large sum of money up front just to be on their books.

    Is it for me?

To be a model in today's cut and thrust society you have to be; ambitious, well organized, punctual, willing to travel/work or live in foreign countries, work long hours, put up with rejection, criticism, have a tolerant and even-tempered personality and above all believe in yourself. You will have to be able to present yourself at your very best at every audition you go to.
You may have to change your lifestyle completely ,exercise regularly, taking care of what you eat, take regular care of your skin, hair and nails and learn to for go parties if this will get in the way of your work.
Support of friends and family members will be important as you will almost certainly face rejection quite regularly, even 'top' models have to audition for assignments and will face rejection at times. Auditioning for modeling assignments can be a daunting task; you may find yourself going to as many as 20 - 50 auditions before landing a modeling job.

  • So how do aspiring models become noticed?

Firstly you need some good photographs of yourself, with which you can promote yourself with, secondly you need to get noticed. This site could be one of your very first steps (everyone has to start somewhere, and you found us).

How do I get my photos?

If you can afford a professional photographer so much the better, if you cannot afford to pay a professional photographer, you still maybe able to get one to take your photos on a 'time for prints' basis (the photographer will take your photos for free but will have the right to use them as he so wishes. They will normally give you a full set of the photographs taken).
Many people will get a friend or relative to take their photos. This is perfectly acceptable and you may feel more relaxed, but you should remember if your working as a model the photographer will be a complete stranger .
Photographs taken by you through a mirror, in poor light, or taken down the photo booth in the local supermarket are not acceptable.
We get many images of "would be models" that are taken in their front room at home complete with the three piece suite and childrens toys in the back ground. As you might have guessed these type of photos don't even get a second look before entering the bin no matter how beautiful the model is.
Another option is to try your local camera club, they will almost certainly be happy to take the shots in exchange for a couple of hours modeling.

Remember these images are your first impression, so don't send photographs taken in your lounge at home, at the very least make sure your images are taken against a plain wall for a back drop. Holiday photos of yourself are great for the family but not really suitable for your portfolio.

    Tips for good photos

  • Be relaxed, it will show in the finished images if you are uncomfortable.
  • If your photographer has no lighting equipment, natural light is better than artificial lighting as this can create colour casts.
  • A white sheet will make an adequate background; this should be flooded by light so there are no nasty black shadows behind you. (Make sure it is ironed first)
  • Have several different types of outfits and accessories, including swim wear.
  • Change your hairstyle every time you change an outfit so you do not look like a clothes prop, (this can be done simply by wearing a ribbon/ hair band, putting your hair up, or even wearing a hat).
  • Get someone to help with makeup if necessary.
  • Do some photos without makeup.
  • Include close-up head and shoulder shots as well as full-length.
  • Try out as many poses as you can, just changing the position of your hands can change a pose.
  • Take black and white photographs as well as colour.

As well as submitting some of your your best photographs to this website, you should also have the best ones blown-up to 10" x 8" prints, mounted on black card or in a black folder to take along to auditions. This is your portfolio, and all modelling agencies will want to see one. A good portfolio should contain photographs from different photographers as they all have a different style and can make you look very different.

How do I make a good impression at an audition?

  • Be positive, confident but not arrogant, agencies like using models the have an easy going personality and can get on with. A pretty face is not everything.
  • Be friendly, but not over friendly, this is an interview.
  • Dress casual but smart, clean well-tailored clothes (skirt best for girls).
  • No heavy makeup.
  • Take swim wear in case they ask you to change.
  • If your doing topless or nude shots don't wear any tight fitting underwear etc. that will leave pressure marks on your skin.
  • Make sure your nails are well cared for, no flakes of old nail varnish' broken nails.
  • Clean hair, (not in need of a cut), roots not showing if hair coloured.
  • Don't forget to clean your shoes.
  • Lastly give yourself plenty of time to get there so you do not arrive flustered.
